Start with the work
Start with a concrete purpose, channel and recipient. This checklist identifies unanswered operational questions; it does not decide the legal basis for a campaign. Obtain appropriate advice for the jurisdictions and use involved.
Build the working checklist
- Record where the information came from and what the person requested.
- Review the purpose, territory and current platform policies.
- Document preferences, exclusions and how a stop request is handled.
- Assign a reviewer and keep research separate from campaign activation.
Check it against a real task
Follow a stop request through the actual systems. Check that later imports, scheduled steps and manual handoffs do not restart the contact.
What to take away
When the basis is unknown, keep automated campaigns off. Research can remain a separate, bounded activity with its own data-handling review.
Review the actual use, not an address in isolation

| Question | Evidence to retain | If unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| Who and where? | Recipient group, operating locations and relevant jurisdictions | Ask an appropriate reviewer before activating the workflow |
| Why this communication? | The request, subscription purpose or reviewed business task | Separate research from any campaign |
| Where did the data come from? | Source, collection context and verification record | Do not infer interest from data availability |
| Which channel? | Current platform conditions and the actual account’s eligibility | Keep the automated path off |
| How does it stop? | Preferences, exclusions and an accountable operator | Test removal across every connected sending path |
Three situations to keep separate
A person requesting a resource through a social interaction, a person subscribing to a newsletter and a business contact found during account research start from different evidence. Record the purpose of each workflow separately. A single checkbox labelled “consent” cannot decide every legal, channel or account question. The fit finder’s documented-basis answer is an operating gate, not a legal approval.
A stop-request rehearsal
- Use a controlled test record that is in the relevant workflow.
- Record a request to stop and identify the operator responsible for interpreting it.
- Inspect planned steps, imports and connected systems for later reactivation.
- Resolve any gap before wider use; obtain appropriate advice where the actual use requires it.
