Start with the operating gap
A marketplace report shows a change in sales or advertising spend, but the team cannot explain the reporting window, product identifiers or included costs. A useful analytics requirement starts with one business question and a reconciled sample. More charts do not create a reliable source record or an accountable action.
Keep the category boundary visible
Operational analytics uses authorized store, marketplace or advertising data. Creative research observes external ads and proposes ideas. Neither establishes the cause of a sales change by itself. Keep gross sales, refunds, fees, advertising spend and estimated margin distinct, and record currency and time zone.
The record to inspect

| Part of the work | Evidence needed | Failure to rehearse |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Marketplace, account, SKU or product identifier | Two listings combined as one product without review |
| Window | Dates, time zone and data refresh point | Different days compared as if they were equivalent |
| Metric | A written definition with included and excluded costs | Revenue presented as profit |
| Decision | A person owns the action and its review date | A correlation presented as a proven cause |
A proposed small pilot
Select a hypothetical question such as whether an item’s advertising cost changed alongside net sales during a comparable period. DataHawk is a research path for marketplace analytics. Reconcile a small authorized sample to source reports before relying on the derived view.
- Write the business question, source accounts and necessary permissions.
- Define product identifiers, time window, currency and metric formulas.
- Compare a small export against the original reports.
- Record refunds, delayed adjustments and missing values explicitly.
- Assign an action owner and a later review that can keep, change or reject the hypothesis.
When to stop
Pause if source records cannot be reconciled, unrelated periods are mixed or a dashboard metric has no usable definition. Do not infer confidential account data or claim performance improvement from an external ad library.
What to measure and cost
Measure reconciliation error, missing data, freshness and time to a reproducible decision. Verify actual marketplace coverage, connector scope, history, exports and access controls. Assess cost against the recurring question rather than the number of dashboards.
These commerce areas require inputs about products, stores, orders, inventory, destinations or creative work. The eight-category sales fit finder does not assess those conditions. Use the relevant planning record and verify the actual account, territory and current capabilities directly.
