Start with the operating gap
A manufacturer receives an order for a finished item, but the sales record does not establish whether the required materials are free, already allocated or awaiting receipt. The useful starting point is a consistent product and material record, a bill of materials and an owner who can approve a production commitment. Buying software before agreeing those definitions makes the discrepancy harder to explain.
Keep the category boundary visible
Manufacturing inventory describes what can be made and what production consumes. An order platform coordinates selling channels; a shipping tool handles a parcel after the shipment is defined. A new stock figure should not silently change a customer promise. Decide who may allocate materials, revise a bill of materials and release finished goods.
The record to inspect
Scroll horizontally to read all columns.
| Part of the work | Evidence needed | Failure to rehearse |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | One SKU and variant mapping across finished products and components | A channel listing ID mistaken for a physical stock item |
| Material requirement | A reviewed bill of materials and units of measure | A recipe or quantity change with no effective date |
| Allocation | Available, committed and expected quantities kept distinct | The same unit promised to two orders |
| Production completion | Consumption, finished output and exceptions recorded | A partially completed order marked fully available |
A proposed small pilot
Use a hypothetical made-to-order item with two components. Rehearse a normal order, one missing component, a changed quantity and a partial completion. This is a proposed exercise; no Katana account or production result has been tested by Sales Fit Lab.
- Agree SKU identifiers, units, component quantities and who approves changes.
- Record a small starting stock count and its evidence.
- Allocate components to a controlled order and inspect what remains available.
- Receive a delayed component and complete only part of the production quantity.
- Reconcile consumed material, remaining work and finished output before accepting another order.
When to stop
Pause if a unit conversion is ambiguous, stock cannot be reconciled to the starting count or a revised recipe overwrites a production commitment without review. A dashboard total is insufficient if the operator cannot explain one item.
What to measure and cost
Compare stock discrepancies, shortages discovered after commitment, manual corrections and reconciliation time. Keep a dated record of each adjustment. Research Katana for the production requirement; investigate Goflow or Shippo separately when the missing task is channel coordination or parcel handling.
These commerce areas require inputs about products, stores, orders, inventory, destinations or creative work. The eight-category sales fit finder does not assess those conditions. Use the relevant planning record and verify the actual account, territory and current capabilities directly.
