Start with the operating gap
A shopper asks to be notified when a particular variant returns. Another shopper separately joins ongoing SMS marketing. These are different requests. A useful system retains the product variant, request source, channel, preference state and the event that should end the requested alert. It must not quietly turn every stock request into an unrestricted promotional subscription.
Keep the category boundary visible
A restock event answers a specific availability request; a promotional sequence has its own audience and purpose. Transactional order updates form another workflow. Review the actual channel, collection wording, destination and preference handling for each one. This guide identifies operational review questions and does not determine legal permission.
The record to inspect

| Part of the work | Evidence needed | Failure to rehearse |
|---|---|---|
| Restock request | Variant, requested channel, request date and completion condition | A notification sent for a different size or color |
| Ongoing marketing | A separate documented choice and relevant preference state | A one-time alert treated as a general subscriber |
| Availability event | Sellable quantity and the actual event time | An alert triggered while stock is unavailable |
| Stop or change | The appropriate exclusion reaches every connected path | A later import restarts an obsolete subscription |
A proposed small pilot
Use clearly marked test records for a requested variant alert, an unrelated variant, a separate marketing subscriber and a withdrawn request. Notify Me! is a research path for restock requests; Postscript is a separate Shopify SMS marketing investigation. Compare the required workflow rather than treating both as interchangeable.
- Write the one-time request and any separate subscription choice in plain language.
- Record the minimum product, source, channel and preference fields.
- Create controlled in-stock and unavailable events for the requested variant.
- Test a duplicate request, preference change and stock that disappears before the shopper acts.
- Confirm the message and customer record reflect the same event and purpose.
When to stop
Pause if the collection purpose cannot be reconstructed, a request for one variant triggers another, or an exclusion fails. Do not activate a new channel merely because the provider lists it. Account eligibility, geography and message conditions require their own review.
What to measure and cost
Count correct requested alerts, duplicates, preference failures and unresolved enquiries. Keep send, click, order and refund events separate; none alone proves incremental revenue. Include channel charges, setup, operator coverage and connected tools in the cost review.
These commerce areas require inputs about products, stores, orders, inventory, destinations or creative work. The eight-category sales fit finder does not assess those conditions. Use the relevant planning record and verify the actual account, territory and current capabilities directly.
